A BRIEF HISTORY OF BEKTASHISM
The Bektashi Way is a mystical path whose goal is to perfect man’s soul. It is the path which guides
the believer and brings him to his ultimate goal: closeness to God. As a doctrine originating from Islamic
principles, Bektashism has its own interpretation of the Holy Qur’an and the teachings of the Prophet
Muhammad and the Twelve Holy Imams. Bektashism respects all monotheist faiths. The late Baba Rexheb
presented clearly the fundaments of Bektashi doctrine and history in his well-known book The Mysticism of
Islam and Bektashism (Detroit, 1970).
History reveals that Bektashism was founded by the Sufi mystic Hajji Bektash Veli in the 13th
century. In his time, he had 320 Missionaries who he sent to various places throughout Anatolia and the
Balkans. This path developed through a long line of spiritual successors to Hajji Bektash Veli, such as: Balım
Sultan, Kalender Shah, Sersem Ali Dede, Turabi Ali Dede, Mehmet Perishan Dede, Hasan Dede, Ibrahim
Dede, Halil Hakkı Dede, Hajji Feyzullah Dede, Salih Niyazi Dede etc. This process of growth and mutual
exchange, with experiences and positive learning of the time and its values, kept and made richer the Bektashi
tradition and throughout the centuries especially between the various ethnic groups and nations that it
touched. Because of this continuous process, Bektashism become recognized in the world for its spirituality.
By means of their particular hierarchy, Bektashi tekkes (lodges) played an important role in the
religious life of various places of the world. Bektashi babas and the dervishes spread their mystical
interpretation of Islam throughout Turkey, the former Yugoslavia, Greece, Albania, and even established a
presence in Egypt, Iraq and Hungary. From the documentation we known that Bektashis had a main center for
preparing their dervishes in the distinguished tekke near the town of Dimetokia (in Greece; now destroyed),
where some 400 dervishes studies every year. That tekke had its own library that was one of the richest in the
world. It was there also that Bektashism took on its hierarchical structure with its own individuality, making it
an important part of history and a spiritual treasure from all the nations of the world. This value can be
recognized in the attitude of Bektashis for being forward-looking in their time, place and culture facing the
various problems of the world with calmness and tolerance, aiding in the peaceful interaction with all peoples
of faith.
The 17th century Evliya Зelebi, in his travelogue the Siyâhetname, stated that there were some 700
Bektashi tekkes existing in the Ottoman Empire, all founded by the 700 dervishes of Hajji Bektash Veli. In the
13th century, Hajji Bektash Veli sent the well-known dervish Sarı Saltık to the Balkans and Albania. With his
assistance, several renowned tekkes were constructed there: the Sarı Saltık Tekke in the city of Krujл, the
tekkes of Sinan Pasha and Kuzum Baba in the city of Vlorл, the tekke of Frashлr near the town of Pлrmet, the
tekke of Malinda, the tekke of Prishta, the tekke of Tomor near the town of Skrapar, the tekke of Melзan, the
tekke of Turan in the vicinity of the city of Korзa, the tekke of Kolonja, the tekke of Tepelenл. In addition
several ancient Bektashi tekkes outside of Albania are the Durabi Sultan Tekke near Rhini, Greece, and some
in the city of Novi Pazar, the town of Gjakova, Prizren and Mitrovica in Kosova, and in the city of Tetova,
Macedonia. Thus Bektashism expanded in all areas of Albania, particularly in south and central Albania. The
faith was warmly championed by the Albanian people of that time.
The Bektashis and their religious institutions provided great help to the country during the Albanian
national renaissance of the late 19th century. This was as a result of their spiritual notions and the rules of their
mystical system, in which the fundamentals are the beliefs in human rights and equality, tolerance and
harmony with all. During the Ottoman period there developed among Albanians the genre of aljamiado
literature (bejtexhine) and many Bektashi babas and dervishes composed numerous poems, nefes, gülbenks etc.
During the 18th and 19th centuries we have many well-known Albanian Bektashi poets: Nezim Frakulla, Hasan
Zyko Kamberi, Sulejman Naibi, Zenel Bastari, Baba Muharrem Mahzuni, Baba Shememi, Baba Adem Vexhi,
Baba Meleq Shлmbлrdhenji, Baba Salih Matohasanaj, Baba Ali Turabiu etc. Those who mane important
contributions to the Albanian national case are: Baba Fejzл Bulqiza, Baba Ahmet Turani, Baba Hysen
Melзani, Baba Selim Elbasani, Baba Fetahu, Ahmet Siri Baba Leskoviku etc. It is important to also mention
the roles of Nasibi Tahir Skлnderasi, Dalip Frashлri, Shahin Kaso Frashлri (known as Baba Alush of the tekke
of Frashлr) played in the national rebirth. Significant support was also given by the brothers Frashлri: Abdul,
Naim and Sami. The cooperation among Bektashis everywhere assisted the effort to spread ideas for
2
independence. It also pressed the development of the Albanian language and the aided in the distribution of
Albanian-language books. The distinguished literati Naim Frashлri composed several works on Bektashism,
the most notable being his epic “Qerbelaja” (Karbala’), as well as the Bektashi Pages.
All the infrastructure of the Bektashi Order in Albania placed itself in the service of the Albanian
national cause by developing the Albanian language, opening Albanian-language schools, organizing the
political resistance, and allowing Albanians to discover their historical and national values. These works
increased the authority of Bektashis in Albania through their giving importance to relevant circumstances and
ideas in the Albanian language. Tekkes and babas became intimate with Albanian nationalism through their
contributions in the battles for freedom and independence. Many politicians and people, who were educated
during that period of the time, were from the Bektashi faith. We can here note Ali Pasha Tepelena, who
created conditions for an important national movement, Ismail Qemali, who realized the aspirations of the
Albanians for an independent state in 1912, Akif Pasha Elbasani, who constructed bridges toward a modern
state, and many other important personalities. In a publication of the last decades, is written that more than
25% of the population of Albania was Bektashi.
After 1912, Bektashism in Albania became more organized, especially after the Assembly of Lushnja
in 1920. In 17 January 1921, the Albanian Bektashis organized their first congress, held in the tekke of Prishta
of Skrapar, which was followed by other congresses in the proceeding years. The second one was held in July
9th 1924 in the Hajderie tekke of Gjirokastлr; the third was held in September 1929 in the Turan Tekke near
Korзa. These Bektashi congresses recognized the broadminded spirit of their doctrine, and dealing with the
problems of the nation, they could also improve the edicts of the Bektashi Community regulating the social,
religious, economical aspects of the community etc. The spirit of the Bektashi congresses made efforts to
consolidate the Albanian Bektashi community, which served as the ethical and the soul of the believers. The
spirituality, tolerance and patriotism furnished Bektashi doctrine, thinking and philosophy with a new outlook.
The Bektashi Community in Albania linked their faith with the Albanian cause without upsetting
the universal character of Bektashism, like during the Second World War when their maxim “Without
Fatherland, there is no Faith” became an inspiration for the Bektashi believers and Albanians in general. This
is a fact that many have acknowledged in their books about Bektashism, for example: Hasluck, Jokl, Durham,
Bartl, Trix, Birge, Babinger, Norris, Popovic, DeJong, Clayer, Elise, della Rocca etc. From Albanian authors,
most well known are: Baba Ali Turabiu, Baba Rexheb, and Ibrahim Hasnaj.
In 1913 Feyzullah Dedebaba, head of the Bektashi Order, passed away in the mother lodge (Pirevi)
found in Hacıbektaskцy, Anatolia. In his place, the council of dedes appointed Salih Niyazi Dede (d.1942).
Although he was younger he had confirmation as a Bektashi cleric, and was a noteworthy organizer with an
unspoiled personality. He had the trust of the people and he was admired by clerical personalities from many
places of the Ottoman Empire. While holding the sheepskin (post) of the Pirevi, Salih Niyazi Dede served the
order in a flawless manner, in cooperation with all Bektashi tekkes and their councils helping them function in
every aspect until 1925 when the newly-founded Republic Turkey outlawed Sufism and closed all tekkes
within its borders. The negotiations of Salih Niyazi Dede between the years of 1926–1928 with the babas of
Albania and with the Albanian government for the relocation of the headquarters of the order to Albania
were successful. The 3rd Congress of Bektashis held in the Turan Tekke of Korзa in 1929 presented an idea for
the relocation of the world center of the Bektashis to Albania and proposed that the world leader remain Salih
Niyazi Dede, who was already in that position in Pirevi in Turkey. The Pirevi in was closed and later opened as
museum which exists to this day, where people make pilgrimage in August every year to the grave of Hajji
Bektash Veli.
The Government of the King Zog, respecting the desire of the Bektashi clerics with a special decree
in 1930, appointed Salih Niyazi Dede to be the world leader of Bektashis and in August of the same year the
tekke of Melзan in Korзa was nominated to be the order’s headquarters, while special decree # 659 (dated
02/08/1930) moved the world center to Tirana. The world leader, Salih Niyazi Dede served as head of a
religious group, not a political or state organization.
The world headquarters of Bektashi Order, as one of the four traditional religions in Albania, has its
own history. In a document from 1932 in the state archives it is written: “The chief of the tekke of Hajji
Bektash Veli in Kırsehir, His Holiness, the World Leader of Bektashis, Salih Niyazi Dede, who is from an
Albanian family, known as a father for Bektashis all over the world, was forced to leave the Bektashi center in
Turkey, and move to Tirana as a world leader of Bektashis, while having the highest duty of the world head of
his religion”.
3
The world headquarters functioned during the Second World War, and continued later with the
Bektashi congresses (the 4th in 1945 and the 5th in 1950) when a significant job was performed by the then
world head, Ahmet Myftar Dede (d. 1980), who was taking part in some conferences for freedom. In that
period he actively cooperated with the other Bektashi tekkes and gave Bektashism new course in the world.
Ahmet Myftar Dede had his trusted servant on that time, Dervish Reshat Bardhi (from the village of Lusлm
near the town of Kukлs) whom Dede Ahmet prepared for the yet to come. The world headquarters functioned
until 1967, when the communist government outlawed all religious activity in Albania.
During the dark years of religious repression in Albania, a burning light for the Bektashi believers was
tekke of Baba Rexheb (d. 1995) in Detroit, USA. This tekke was constructed with the donations of Bektashi
believers in 1954, and continued to function thanks to the motivation and the scholarship of the blessed Baba
Rexheb as well as the help of American institutions, where the values of the democracy remained to keep and
to transmit the traditional Bektashi moral and religious values to the coming generations. Baba Rexheb, by
being informed mainly through believers in Kosovo and Macedonia, carefully followed the religious situation
in Albania and encouraged believers not to lose trust and hope in God.
The collapse of the totalitarian system in Albania in 1990 and the commencement of democratic rule
generated a new era for Bektashis living in Albania. On the occasion of the Bektashi celebration of Sultan
Nevruz (22nd of March, 1990) the official resurrection of the religious activity at the World Headquarters of
Bektashi Order in Tirana was authorized after a suspension of nearly 30 years. At this event was the saintly
Mother Teresa, who was then visiting Albania for the first time. Mother Teresa presented a kindhearted
contribution to the restarting of the World Headquarters of Bektashi Order. His Holiness Dedebaba Reshat
Bardhi began the important undertaking of reanimating the Bektashi faith as an organization as well as
reconstructing the many ruined tekkes and türbes of the Bektashi cult in Albania. He also strove to strengthen
relations with other tekkes in the world.
Soon after, a number of Bektashi congresses were held: the 6th in 1993, the 7th in 2000, and the 8th in
2005. These events brought strengthen of the order and enhanced the condition of Bektashism in Albania by
an inscribing the institutional framework on contemporary Bektashism that was existent in the past. This is
the great merit of the Head of Bektashi Order, His Holiness Hajji Dedebaba Reshat Bardhi, who personally
and in the name of all Bektashi believers, rekindle the “never-extinguishing candle of Bektashism.”
Currently, there are relations between hundreds of thousands of Bektashi believers from all around
the world, as well as many tekkes from many lands like: Kosova, Macedonia, the United States, Bulgaria,
Turkey, Greece etc. In their relations they are not only inclined to appreciate the World Center of Bektashis
located in Tirana, but also to communicate messages of peace and love. The participation of representatives
from many different countries of the world at the Bektashi congresses, in the new circumstances, amplifies the
official acknowledgment of the Bektashi World Center in Albania. Many scholars and individuals from abroad
have come to study Bektashism as interest in the faith is growing everyday. This, among other reasons, is
occurring due to Bektashism’s broadminded spirit and open-mindedness towards others in contrast to religious
exclusivism and fundamentalism.
The World Headquarters of Bektashi Order is an officially authorized organization founded on
international standards as well as the constitutional law of Albania. It functions with the rule of centralization,
strong and disciplined spiritual leaders and clerics, and the mutually respectful efforts, accountability and
brotherhood, all rooted in the statutes and the canonic convention of the Bektashi Order.
Throughout its history the Bektashi Order has given, and is still giving, valuable help in creating a
wealth of tolerance, interreligious dialogue, as well as societal harmony, spiritual tranquility, wisdom, and
respect between peoples which are needed so much our country and the entire world. The rewarding
cooperation between religions in Albania as well as the understanding between them is a virtuous message in
these precarious times and an exceptional spiritual treasure for humanity and all the people of the world.
